The Woman’s Right to Know Act
Enacts the "woman's right to know act"; provides women facing unplanned pregnancies who are considering abortion with full information and reflection time prior to having an abortion performed upon them; provides a 24-hour waiting period to give women the opportunity to receive information about the medical risks of abortion, alternatives to the procedure, and the unborn child's development.
Every abortion performed leaves two victims in its wake: the unborn child that has its life torn away from it, and the mother who is seduced with abortion as the answer to her problems at a very vulnerable point in her life.
Since the abortion industry stands to gain financial profit from a woman's decision to abort, they knowingly suppress facts about the gruesome nature of the procedure, its devastating physical and psychological consequences, and the easy availability of alternatives such as adoption.
New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms is not afraid to voice opposition to abortion, but even those who support the so-called woman’s “right to choose” should support this bill for two basic reasons.
1. The Rights of Women
Patients have the right to know the risk of any medical procedure. Women, therefore, should also be given accurate information on the risks of abortion, such as infection, hemorrhage, danger to subsequent pregnancies, breast cancer, infertility, psychological consequences, and other dangers.
The Women's Right to Know Act ensures that women are fully informed about alternatives, including adoption, and given time (24 hours) before making a decision.
22 states have recognized this right and passed their own version of the Woman’s Right to Know Act. The United States Supreme Court found in Planned Parenthood vs. Casey that the Pennsylvania law was constitutional.
2. The Responsibility of Doctors
The State of New York requires doctors to inform their patients of the risks of other medical procedures and get a written consent BEFORE the procedure can be performed. Why should abortion be any different?
The bill’s sponsors said it best: “As long as the practice of abortion is legal in New York, the state has the responsibility to protect women against making uninformed decisions.”
New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms and the thousands of churches it represents, urge the Legislature to pass this critical legislation.
