Citizens Resist Call to Redefine Marriage

On Tuesday, June 9, 2009, 2000 concerned citizens from all across New York State descended upon the East Steps of the Capitol to participate in a “Stand for Marriage” rally organized by New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms (NYCF).

The rally featured speakers:

  • New York State Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz (D – Bronx)

  • New York State Senator Marty Golden (R – Brooklyn)

  • New York State Senator James Seward (R – Milford)

  • New York State Assemblyman Michael Benjamin (D – Bronx)

  • Mr. Michael Long, Chairman, New York State Conservative Party

  • Tony Perkins, President, Family Research Council
  • Bishop Harry Jackson, Jr., Founder, High Impact Leadership Coalition
  • Maggie Gallagher, President, National Organization for Marriage
  • Bishop Joseph Mattera, Presiding Bishop of Christ Covenant Coalition
  • Bishop Hector Bonano, CONLICO
  • Rev. George Grace, Senior Pastor, First Bible Baptist Church, Rochester
  • Rev. Duane Motley, Executive Director, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms

Sen. Rev. Ruben Diaz said, "While some may try to imagine that legalizing homosexual marriage is a civil right, New Yorkers are mindful that religious liberties could erode if homosexual marriage were made legal in New York State. As a religious leader, I cherish our religious liberties and refuse to support any legislation that could unleash a host of unintended consequences of legal and financial penalties on New Yorkers who conscientiously object to homosexual marriage. I will continue to protect our religious liberties and urge my colleagues to oppose this bill."

Conservative State Party Chairman Michael Long said, “In recent days, special interest groups have been attempting to move the New York State Senate to redefine marriage.” The Chairman said that the Conservative Party is watching. He reiterated that “Those who vote to destroy the sanctity of marriage will not be supported or endorsed by the Conservative Party.”

Rev. Duane Motley, NYCF’s Executive Director, said, “According to the Word of God, marriage is and always will be the union of a man and a woman.  Since God created marriage, only He has the authority to change it.”
