One Call Today Can Save Religious Liberty Tomorrow PDF Print E-mail

It's been a tumultuous week for many New York City churches. Last Thursday they won a ten-day stay that would have allowed churches to temporarily return to worshiping in public schools during non-school hours, but late last Friday Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Administration filed and won an appeal that put churches back on the street.

As a result of the court decision sought by Mayor Bloomberg's Administration, the New York City Board of Education has evicted more than sixty churches that had been renting New York City public schools for weekend services. As of February 12 these churches are effectively homeless.

New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms has set up a special call alert. Contact your member of Assembly about this important issue.

Senator Martin Golden (R-C, Brooklyn) and Assemblyman Nelson Castro (D, Bronx) have introduced state legislation that would restore the churches' right to worship, but after passing the State Senate the bill stalled in the State Assembly.

The Legislature is on the President's Day break this week and home in their district offices. Before they return to Albany next week, it's very important they hear from their constituents back home.

Today the case impacts New York City churches meeting in City schools, but some feel that opponents of organized religion could be emboldened to make a move banning churches from meeting in schools or other public places anywhere in the state.
