Same-Sex "Marriage" Economic Engine Stalls PDF Print E-mail

The numbers are in and gay “marriage” is not the economic engine that many advocates predicted it would be. The New York Daily News is reporting that according to State Health Department records:

  • There have been 35,169 marriage licenses issued outside New York City limits since the law took effect in July 2011.

  • The largest portion of issued marriage licenses, 73.2%, was to declared opposite-sex couples.

  • 7,008 licenses were issued to unknown couples, people who did not declare their sexuality on the application form.

  • Only 2,417 marriage licenses were issued to same-sex couples, a mere 6.9%.

The number of same-sex ceremonies is expected to drop and then level off after the initial euphoric rush.

A May 2011 report by the New York State Senate Independent Democratic Conference on the economic impact of recognizing “marriage” between same-sex partners said the move would create $391 million in increased revenue and economic activity for New York State during the next three years.

Rev. Jason J. McGuire, Executive Director, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms (NYCF), said, "It certainly looks like the economic engine that Governor Cuomo promised has stalled. I don’t think other states will fall for the same spin that somehow gay ‘marriage’ can fuel the economy.”

“About the only area that gay nuptials has benefited is campaign accounts. A few wealthy out-of-state and New York City gay activists have greased numerous palms in the Empire State and lined the campaign pockets of politicians who turned their backs on the base,” concluded McGuire.
