Wild Primary Ride in 2012 PDF Print E-mail

If you like to vote (and who doesn't, right?) you'll have your fill of it in 2012. New York is currently on track to hold three primaries (April, June and September) in addition to multiple March special elections and the November General Election. Welcome to a wild ride in 2012!

The Presidential primary will be held on April 24, the congressional primaries thanks to a federal judge’s recent ruling is tentatively scheduled for June 26, and we’re still awaiting word of an agreement on when the primaries for State Senate and State Assembly races will be.

Right now Senate and Assembly primaries are scheduled for September 11, but it seems foolish to spend all that money on another set of primaries. It would make more sense to hold these primaries the same date as the June congressional ones.

Legislators are concerned about a June date, because they are still in session in Albany until the third week of June. It may give primary challengers an advantage back home if legislators can’t be there to campaign themselves. From where I sit incumbents have all the advantage, if challengers get a little edge it certainly wouldn’t hurt the process.
