Is America a Muslim Country? PDF Print E-mail

The President of the United States recently stated:  “If you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.” This statement is shocking because just a few weeks before, he said, “We do not consider America to be a Christian country.”

Most Americans consider themselves to be Christians, and America’s laws are based on the Jewish and Christian Scriptures, not the Koran.  America’s culture, including holidays, reflects a Christian heritage.

President Obama was speaking about numbers, and there are a lot of Muslims living in the United States.  Estimates vary, but it is safe to say that between three to seven million Muslims live in the United States.  This is part of a population of close to 300 million, coming to less than 2 percent.  This is definitely NOT a Muslim nation in numbers, laws, or heritage.

America’s citizens do have what most Muslim countries do not – religious freedom.  Muslim Americans have the right to build their Mosques and worship their god as they see fit.  The same is not true in Muslim countries where there are no churches.

Instead of playing fast and loose with the truth, the President should call on his Muslim friends to extend the same religious freedom to Christians who live in Muslim countries.
